How do I create a tag rule?

How to create a rule to automatically tag campaigns, ad sets or ads in Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat

Tag rules are perfect for tagging campaigns, ad sets and ads - either to allow for better organisation and analysis - or for custom automation purposes (such as using rules to automatically scale and reduce bids at specific times of the day).

Tags are a string of words or numbers as defined by you, that you can add into the name of your campaigns, ad sets or ads.

First things first, login and head to the rule creator.

Creating a tagging rule in TrustAds

1. Select your platform

Here you'll choose Facebook (inc. Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network) or Snapchat.

2. Select your ad account(s)

You'll be presented with a list of all available ad accounts under your chosen network. Tick each one you want the rule to run on (one rule will be created per ad account).

3. Select your ad level

Choose whether you want your rule to run on your Campaigns, Ad Sets or Ads.

4. Choose your ad level status

Choose whether you want to add a tag to your campaigns, ad sets or ads that are Active, Paused, Archived or Deleted.

5. Select the time period you want the rule to consider

The rule will only consider this time period when reviewing your ad sets (to see whether they fit your chosen metrics).

Tip: If tagging old campaigns, ad sets or ads (e.g. those that are archived or deleted) you'll likely want to set the time period to Lifetime.

6. Select your metric(s)

Set the criteria you want your campaigns, ad sets/squads or ads to meet in order for the rule to take action.

e.g. You might use criteria such as spend, CTR, ROAS or no. purchases to instantly find and tag archived campaigns that performed well historically.

Tip: Remember to add a 'name contains' or 'name does not contain' metric if you want your rule to ignore (or only run on) specific ad sets. For example you might want to exclude those that already have the tag you are applying.

7. Set your rule action to Add Tag or Add Tag And Pause Advertising

This is perhaps the most obvious selection you need to make when setting up a tag rule!

Please note that Add Tag And Pause Advertising can only be run on Active campaigns, ad sets/squads or ads.

You will be presented with some additional settings for this action:

  • Tag position - Choose whether to add your tag before or after the campaign, ad set/squad or ad name.
  • Tag to add - Specify the tag you wish to add

8. Set your rule name and description

If you're unsure what to put here, treat these as the 'what' and the 'why' of your rule. Consistent, helpful naming conventions will ensure it's easy to keep track of your rules.

e.g. 'Add tag 'ROAS-WINNER' to archived ad sets with ROAS > X, Purchases > X'

That's it!

Simply hit Save and activate and any campaigns, ad sets/squads or ads (depending on your chosen ad level) that meet your criteria will have your tag added (or be paused and have your tag added).

Bonus Options - Set custom frequency and/or scheduling

If you want your rule to run as often as possible, 24/7 you don't need to touch these settings. Your rule will by default run 24/7 every 15 or 30 minutes (depending on your subscription).

If you would like to adjust how often your rule runs, you can choose a different option from the Frequency dropdown.

If you would like your rule to run on specific days of the week, run a maximum number of times or run from, to or between specific dates then select Custom Scheduling.

Tip: If you're bulk adding tags to past campaigns, you might only want the rule to run once. If so, used the Custom Scheduling feature Run Count Limit. Set this to 1.
